We’ve had a rough bit of it the last few days. Maggie is being a stinker. We’ll leave it at that.
I’ve been told not to give Mags squeaky toys, because she is a terrier and the squeaking drives up the prey instinct. For the most part, I’ve found this to be true, except for the case of Maggie’s “baby”.
As you can see from the picture, Maggie has a dog bone toy. It squeaks, but emits a certain kind of squeak that must remind her of her puppies which were taken away from her. Instead of attacking this toy and chewing the heck out of it, Maggie tenderly carries it around in her mouth, and licks it. She tucks it into her other (square-sided, softer) dog bed and puts it to “sleep”. Now I ask her, “Where’s your baby?” and she goes looking for it.
It’s sweet, but kind of sad. I believe dogs remember their puppies for a long time.
Squeak! Your friend,
