What does this grainy picture of Maggie, lying down in the basement, have to do with Hawaiian music?
In a lovely dog-tribute to the amazing voice of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Maggie stood next to the vintage-looking “record player” (it actually plays vinyl, CDs, and cassettes) while I played “Somewhere Over the Rainbow – The Best of israel Kamakawiwo’ole” with her head and ears at rapt attention.
After a few songs, she gave a big sigh and lay down on the spot, not moving an inch from the speaker, where she could hear every perfect note sung by this Hawaiian legend.
From what I have researched, “Iz” as he was known, passed away at the age of 38 years old from respiratory failure. He had lost most of his family to obesity-related issues, and at the time he recorded, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, he weighed in at about 700 pounds. Besides having an exquisite voice, he was a champion for Hawaiian rights.
Having lived in Hawaii for four years, I grew to love Polynesian culture and music. I am very pleased to see that Maggie recognizes a great voice when she hears one.
